SkinPen microneedling uses a small handheld device equipped with tiny needles that puncture the skin’s surface, creating microchannels. As these microchannels are created, the body’s natural wound-healing process is stimulated along with the production of collagen. Collagen is an important protein that gives the skin structure and a firm texture. As we age, collagen production decreases and this causes the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and loose or sagging skin. The SkinPen device encourages new collagen growth to restore facial volume and smooth away these signs of aging.
During your treatment, Dr. Rau will first cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing cream to alleviate any discomfort. Next, the SkinPen device will be applied to your skin and carefully moved across the surface to cover the entire treatment area. The procedure can take 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the severity of your skin condition.
Most men and women in overall good health can benefit from this cosmetic treatment. SkinPen microneedling not only targets signs of aging, but also acne scars, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone or texture. The device can be modified to different depths so that it is safe for all skin types and treat deeper acne scars or more severe wrinkling. If you have an active acne breakout or skin infection, you should wait to receive treatment.
After a microneedling treatment session, mild swelling, redness, and soreness can be expected for 2-4 days. As your skin heals and new collagen grows, you will see gradual improvements in the texture and tone of your skin. It can take up to 6 months to see the final results, but the impact of added collagen lasts for much longer with regular treatments and a good skincare routine.
