Body Lift Procedure

A body lift is a larger term for several surgical procedures that can tighten loose skin and excess fat for a more toned appearance. These procedures are commonly performed on the abdomen, buttocks, arms, and thighs, where you are prone to dimpled or sagging skin. A full body lift is performed by making an incision across the abdomen and all the way around the body near the bikini line. A section of loose skin is removed, and the remaining skin is repositioned for a tighter, smoother appearance.

The buttocks, stomach, waist, thighs, and hips can all be treated with a two-part procedure called a lower body lift. The front portion of the body will be treated in one surgery and once you are recovered, the back portion of the body will be lifted at a second stage. Those with less excessive sagging skin who only want to treat certain parts of their body may be eligible for an arm lift or thigh lift.

Arm Lift

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) removes a section of loose skin and excess fat from underneath the upper arm in the area between the armpit and elbow. The remaining skin is pulled back tightly to eliminate the appearance of saggy arms. Not only will a brachioplasty improve your appearance, but it will also get rid of hanging skin that might be in the way as you exercise or perform other daily activities.

Thigh Lift

Thigh lift surgery can contour and redefine your thighs by getting rid of excess skin, fat, and tissue. Most thigh lifts are performed with an incision down the middle of the thigh from groin to knee. Patients with minimal skin laxity may be able to receive this procedure with an incision made along the top of your thigh near the groin, extending down and around the back of the thigh. Dr. Rau will discuss this and determine the best option at your consultation.

Excess skin between the groin and knee is removed and then pulled back tightly. You can achieve a slimmer, more proportionate figure if you are concerned about saggy skin on your thighs. Liposuction can also be combined with your thigh lift to eliminate pockets of stubborn fat for added slimming and toning.

Back Lift

Fat on the mid-lower fat is a common problem for aging patients and women who have undergone pregnancy. During the back lift procedure, a horizontal incision will be made across the middle of the back, where the bra line sits. This will make it easy to hide the resulting scar. Excess skin from the lower back will be removed and the remaining skin will be pulled up to achieve a tighter, more toned appearance.

The back lift is sometimes referred to as the bra line lift because it also addresses stubborn back fat that bulges around the bra line. Liposuction is commonly included in the back lift procedure to eliminate fat bulges on the back and sides.

Who is a Candidate for a Body Lift?

Candidates for a body lift are men and women bothered by the appearance of excess, sagging skin. This saggy skin may be the result of natural aging, significant weight loss, or pregnancy. You should be in relatively good health and refrain from smoking for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after your surgical procedure.

Results and Recovery

Recovery time from an arm lift or thigh lift takes about 2-4 weeks and recovery from a body lift can take 4-6 weeks since it is a more complex surgery. During your recovery period, avoid strenuous activity and take prescription pain medication as needed to alleviate any discomfort you might have from swelling and bruising.

The results of a body lift are long-lasting, but they may be affected over time by the natural aging process. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with an exercise routine and a healthy diet will also keep you fit, helping you feel and look great for longer!
