The cheekbones are one of the main parts of the facial bone structure. Lost volume in the cheeks or less prominent cheekbones can completely change the shape of your face. If more sculpted facial contours are your desired look, fillers can increase the volume in your cheeks and augment the cheekbones to enhance your youthful contours.
Non-surgical cheekbone enhancement is performed with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane or collagen-stimulating Sculptra. Hyaluronic acid fillers use the same substance naturally found in your body to add cheek volume and firmness to the skin. A fine needle will be used to inject the dermal fillers into your cheeks, but this is often considered minimally painful. A topical numbing cream can also be applied before your injections to maximize your comfort.
Most patients in overall good health are candidates for non-surgical cheekbone enhancement. At your consultation, Dr. Rau or Amy will ask about your medical history, including allergies, medications, and skin conditions. If your skin is particularly sensitive or you have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the dermal filler, you might not be a candidate for cheek fillers.
There is virtually no recovery needed after cheek filler treatment or cheekbone enhancement. However, minor bruising and swelling are common so there are a few precautions you should take for the first few days such as avoiding strenuous activities and sun exposure. You should also sleep on your back for a few days while the filler is settling. All other activities can be resumed immediately. Depending on the product used, results can last up to a year and can be maintained with additional maintenance treatments.
