A neck lift (medically termed platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty) can improve the contours of your jaw and redefine your jawline by eliminating excess fatty tissue and saggy skin from the neck and chin area. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 3 hours.
Dr. Rau will make an incision under the chin where the scar is easily concealed. She will remove excess skin and fat from the neck, under the chin, and along the jawline. Neck muscles and vertical neck bands that have separated over time will be tightened to reverse the signs of aging and create a more sculpted look. Liposuction may also be used to eliminate excess fat and redefine the neck and chin area. It can be used alone or in combination with surgical techniques.
Neck lifts are often performed on patients in their 40s-60s with moderate to severe sagging skin or pockets of fat. Those in their 40s with less severe separation of the vertical neck bands and loose skin might benefit more since their results last longer. You might not be a candidate if you smoke or have cardiovascular disease, blood clotting disorders, or known issues with scarring.
Patients should take about 2 weeks off work and avoid strenuous activity after neck lift surgery. Prescription pain medication will be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort from swelling and bruising during this time. Most of the swelling will have reduced after two weeks, but it can take up to three months for the swelling to completely reduce. Neck lift results can last anywhere from 10-15 years. You will achieve a more youthful appearance and continue aging gracefully.
