Breast reductions can be performed for a variety of cosmetic and health concerns. Whether you are concerned about asymmetry or overly large breasts, Dr. Rau can help with comprehensive, compassionate care.
Breast reduction surgery is performed for cosmetic and health purposes. Women with overly large breasts often experience shoulder, back, and neck pain from the weight of their heavy breasts. Skin irritation under the breasts is also a common concern. Breast reduction is a great option for any woman who wants a smaller breast size, whether or not you have these physical symptoms.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Usually, an incision will be made around the nipple-areolar complex and extend down to the bottom of the breasts, but other surgical techniques might be used. During the procedure, Dr. Rau will remove excess breast tissue and skin and then sculpt the remaining tissue for a symmetrical breast shape. Once completed, the incisions will be sutured and bandaged, and you will be fitted with a surgical bra.
Other types of breast reduction and revision surgeries include:
Not everyone has axillary breast tissue but those who do may dislike the lumpy appearance it causes. Axillary breast tissue is found near the armpits and excess tissue can create a bulge that resembles a fat pad and sticks out when wearing certain clothes like sleeveless tops or dresses. Accessory nipple removal can be added to this procedure.
Large, protruding nipples that are visible under clothing may cause discomfort and make people feel self-conscious. Nipple reduction can be performed alone or in combination with other breast procedures like breast augmentation or breast lift.
The areola is the circle of pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple. Some people feel self-conscious about overly large areolas since it creates a disproportionate look with the size of the breast tissue. Dark areola that significantly contrasts with the surrounding skin is also a common concern. This is a concern for both men and women.
Gynecomastia is a condition that causes the growth of excess male breast tissue, giving men the appearance of feminine breasts. Gynecomastia surgery removes glandular breast tissue and excess fat with a combination of excision and liposuction. Once the glandular tissue is removed, it cannot grow back so the results are permanent.
It is not uncommon to experience soreness for 2-3 weeks after the procedure but most of the pain will alleviate after one week. Pain medication will be prescribed to help keep you comfortable. After one month, you can start to get back to light exercises and more of your normal activities but you should wait about 6 weeks for intense workouts.
