Turn back the clock 10 years with facelift surgery! A facelift will lift and tighten your facial tissues to restore natural youthfulness and give you a more refreshed appearance.
A facelift (medically termed a rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that tightens and lifts the skin on the face for a more youthful appearance. It can be combined with or include elements of a neck lift, brow lift, and/or eyelid lift. Depending on the severity of your loose skin and other factors, there are two types of facelifts you can consider:
The standard facelift surgery can address moderate to severe signs of aging like sagging skin, deep facial folds, and sagging jowls. Dr. Rau will make incisions behind the hairline where they will be hidden in the natural folds and creases of your skin. This allows her to tighten and restructure the deeper tissues and facial muscles of the cheeks, chin, and forehead. Excess skin will be also removed to lift and tighten your facial features. A facelift is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia and will take about 3-6 hours to complete.
A mini facelift is a great option for patients who are just starting to notice the signs of aging. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the invasiveness of the surgery and your comfort level. Dr. Rau will make small incisions along the hairline behind the ears and lift the structural tissue of the cheeks through these incisions. This will correct jowls, enhance the jawline, and give you a more refreshed look.
Patients in their 30s-40s with mild skin laxity and other signs of aging may be candidates for a mini facelift. Patients with more severe signs of aging, usually in their 50s-60s, will need a full facelift. These age ranges can vary, however, based on your individual skin condition and cosmetic goals. Candidates for any facial plastic surgery should be relatively healthy individuals who do not smoke and have realistic expectations for their surgery.
After facelift surgery, patients should take 1-2 weeks off work and avoid any strenuous activity, including bending from the waist and lifting heavy objects. Swelling and bruising are common during this time, especially during the first few days, so your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort.
After one month, most patients begin to see their results and optimal results will be seen at 6 months once all the swelling reduces. Because of this, we recommend scheduling your procedure at least one month before any special occasion. Once you are healed, you can expect your beautiful results to last about 10 years!
