Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can eliminate pockets of stubborn fat. It is commonly used on the abdomen, back, love handles, thighs, upper arms, buttocks, and under the chin. The most common liposuction technique is tumescent liposuction which uses a sterile solution of lidocaine and epinephrine to stiffen the treatment area. A small tube called a cannula is then inserted through small incisions to suck out fat cells with a vacuum-like applicator.
Other liposuction techniques include ultrasound-assisted liposuction or VASER liposuction can be used for areas where there is more fibrous fat, such as the back. Ultrasonic energy moves help to break up fat cells, making them easier to remove. Liposuction can also be combined with BodyTite or FaceTite for added skin tightening and toning.
Although liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia may be used if your liposuction procedure is combined with a tummy tuck, a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin from the abdomen.
Men have slightly different goals for their ideal body and desire muscle definition in their chest, abdomen, love handles, and jawline. Liposuction for men focuses on these areas to achieve better muscle definition and create a more masculine figure. The chest is an area specific to men’s liposuction, especially if they have a condition called gynecomastia which causes excess growth of male breast tissue.
Almost anyone who wants to eliminate excess fat is a candidate for liposuction procedures, but it is important to remember that this is not a weight loss procedure. You should be within 30lbs of your ideal weight and be in relatively good health.
After your liposuction procedure, it is common to have minor swelling, bruising, and soreness. Dr. Rau will prescribe pain medication to alleviate this discomfort and you will be advised to wear a compression garment for several weeks. You will have to take about one week off work and avoid strenuous activity and exercise for about 4-6 weeks.
