Breast implant revision is a cosmetic procedure performed after a previous breast augmentation, usually several months or years later. There are several types of breast implant revision surgery, including removal, replacement, capsule work, fat grafting in addition to the implant or in the place of the implant and inframammary fold reconstruction and reinforcement.
Breast implant removal surgery may be necessary to treat capsular contracture, the formation of scar tissue, or an implant rupture. Sometimes the implants may still be in good condition, but the patient no longer wishes to have implants. Implant removal is performed under general anesthesia and takes about one hour but this time can vary depending on the severity of the breast damage. Dr. Rau typically performs this procedure with an incision under the breast folds, but other options can be discussed to meet your cosmetic goals.
If you wish to change the size of your breast implants or replace a ruptured implant, implant replacement is an easily customizable procedure that can increase or decrease the size of your breasts. Implant replacement is performed similarly to implant removal but may take a little longer since new implants are being put in place. You can also choose to have a breast lift to further enhance the breast appearance.
If the breast implants have descended down and to the sides of the chest over time, an implant pocket revision will create more support and give them a better position. During this procedure, the pocket will be reshaped and an internal bra made from a mesh-like material may be placed around the implant for added support.
The first qualification for candidacy is to have had an initial augmentation breast surgery. Women who are concerned about an implant rupture, capsular contraction, or the changing appearance of their implants can benefit from breast implant revision. You should be in overall good health and refrain from smoking 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after your procedure.
Depending on the surgical technique used for your breast implant revision, you may be required to wear a surgical bra for several weeks to help with swelling and support the healing breast tissue. Dr. Rau may have also placed surgical drains to prevent fluid buildup, and these will be removed at a post-op appointment. Swelling and soreness will occur, especially during the first few weeks, but pain medication will be prescribed to ease your discomfort. Depending on the degree of revision, some cases may have to be staged ti achieve a safe and aesthetic result, especially if the original implant size, texture and location (above or below the muscle) are unknown. Full recovery will take several months as swelling reduces and surgical scars fade.
