Feminine rejuvenation or vaginal rejuvenation refers to cosmetic surgeries that improve the appearance and function of the female genitalia, including the vagina and outer extremities such as the labia. Many women choose to have these procedures for medical and aesthetic benefits.
Feminine rejuvenation or cosmetic vaginal surgery can have physical and emotional benefits for women. At Amavi Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Rau performs two types of vaginal rejuvenation procedures.
Vaginoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that tightens the vaginal canal after childbirth. During your surgery, excess skin will be removed, and stitches will be used to secure loose tissue and tighten the vaginal opening.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that decreases the side of the labia minora, the inner tissues of the female genitalia. There are two different techniques that can be used. With the trim procedure, excess tissue will be trimmed so that the labia minora sits flush against the labia majora, the outer folds. Another option is the wedge procedure. Dr. Rau will remove a wedge-shaped piece of tissue from the middle of the labia, leaving the wrinkled edge of the labia intact. This creates a more natural look that may be preferred by some patients.
Similar techniques can be used to reduce the size of the labia majora (the outer folds) or to add fat to the external labia to restore volume. Dr. Rau can use excision or liposuction on the labial tissues for a proportionate, natural look.
Women who feel bothered by the appearance of their genitalia or suffer from discomfort because of their enlarged labia or excess vaginal tissue are candidates for surgical vaginal rejuvenation. Childbirth injuries are often a reason to receive these procedures, but large labia can also be the result of genetics, weight changes, or hormonal changes during menopause.
Women choose to have labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons or because large labia can easily be twisted, pinched, or pulled during physical activities such as intercourse or exercise. Excess tissue can also make cleansing more difficult so labiaplasty can be performed to improve genital hygiene.
Depending on the complexity of the surgery you receive, recovery time can vary. However, you should expect to take at least a few weeks off work and avoid any strenuous activity. Your doctor may recommend a dilator once you are healed. These devices gently stretch the inside of your vagina and are helpful for women who have pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
After labiaplasty, women are often less at risk for urinary tract infections and have improvements in vaginal dryness and pain that occurs during physical activity. Pain during sex can also be improved after vaginoplasty.
